The BiliPic System is a smartphone-based test kit that clinical technicians use to estimate a newborn’s bilirubin level and screen for jaundice. The box contains around a hundred test strips and five readers. The product is made by Bilimetrix USA and meant to be distributed in low-income countries, so every printed piece has to be clear, highly visual, and usable by anyone.

For a “Design for a Cause” studio project, my group of three worked with Bilimetrix USA to design the retail box and booklet. One member handled the packaging, another created a flexible six-column template for the reader manual, and I designed the Application Usage Instructions booklet.

The app’s original instructions were one long and sometimes confusing instruction manual. I rebuilt them as a 3.5 × 3.5 in booklet that fits inside the box, grouped into clear sections with a table of contents, reworded for easier readability, and created a design that fit the cohesive look of the brand.

Below is the mockup of the box and the usage instructions I created, along with the exterior of the manual and the template designs within. To learn more about Bilimetrix USA, follow the link to their webpage at the bottom of this page.
